Meet discerning foodies Aly, Jane, Jenny, Maryann, Adrian and Dianne. All six live in OC Connections supported accommodation, sharing two houses next door to each other and have developed a shared interest in exploring Melbourne’s cafe culture.
The club came about when the group developed an interest in healthy eating and selected to substitute their weekly takeaway nights to a Saturday morning cafe outing.
Along with their support workers, the housemates research eateries featured in city guide Broadsheet.com.au and select a new place to taste test on a regular basis. Their selection is usually driven by price, accessibility, menu-selection and location. Wholefoods Ferntree Gully is a favourite because of the healthy food options at reasonable prices as well as the fact that it is next to a Vintage Market, where the group heads after their meal.
Accommodation Team Leader, Whitney Kendall, is especially proud of the healthy eating direction the group has taken. It has become a shared interest, which has further strengthened the bond and friendship between the six of them.
“It has been really heartening to see how well this group have taken to eating healthy. They have been supporting each other and learning about all the health options together, which makes it easier” says Whitney.
Given their knowledge and appreciation of the cafe scene, this group will be reviewing cafe’s for the OC Connections website, to assist other’s to select the best venues around Melbourne. Evaluation will be based on accessibility, customer service, price, quality of food and location.
