ROYAL COMMISSION GOVERNMENT RESPONSE AND NDIS BILL COMMUNITY FORUM

Last week, the government’s response to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability was released to the public.

Only 13 out of 222 recommendations have been accepted at this stage.

This is incredibly disappointing and greatly impacts vulnerable Australians on the NDIS. Quality providers and advocate groups reject the dismissive response towards systemic violence and discrimination of people with disabilities, calling on the government to enact appropriate and clear timelines for implementing all recommendations.

OC Connections joins the outcry for a better NDIS that supports people with disabilities to have choice and control over their care, goals, and advocacy.

We call on all levels of government to enact the 222 recommendations and embed a Disability Reform Implementation Council to oversee and navigate the reforms.

We call on the government to establish a federal Human Rights Act in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The Royal Commission was a nation-wide, four-year examination of how people with disabilities are treated while receiving care. Stories of violence, neglect and discrimination filled three volumes of the Final Report – the disability sector demands a response that does justice to the findings of the Commission and commits to reforming the NDIS to better support vulnerable Australians.

Leaders with disabilities and representatives of the sector advocate passionately for the community and will continue to raise their voices until they are heard.

Join us for an NDIS Bill Community Forum hosted by Every Australian Counts (EAC).
