Armed with a shopping list and some money, participants enjoy the opportunity to complete their shopping independently (or with support) at the Dandenong Market while interacting with the colourful market community.
When buying items, we often use visual aids such as Compic to assist participants with their shopping (Compic uses simple line drawings to assist people with little or no speech, poor literacy skills or language barriers). This encourages independent shopping, money-handling and communication skills. Many group members build strong relationships with stallholders through regular visits, which also helps build the confidence to shop independently on future visits.
