Our three-bedroom home in Oakleigh provides respite for people with disability aged 15 –  65.  It helps foster friendships and skill development in a safe environment whilst providing respite for both participants and their carers.

Our Short Term Accommodation offers participants the opportunity to foster friendships, learn new living skills and independence and participate in community-based activities.

While in our STA, participants are encouraged to be as independent as possible and responsible for personal choices and decisions.  It provides a safe space to develop independent living skills and work towards the goal of independent living.

Facility Based Respite Care

Our Aim

As with all our service offerings, our Short Term Accommodation (STA) has a focus on person-centred active support, helping you to achieve the goals you have set at home, at work and doing day activities.

Whether your goal is to build independence, foster friendships, participate in community-based activities or just to take a break from your usual home, we will work with you to determine how we can facilitate your goals while staying in our Short Term Accommodation.

We can work with you on reaching goals such as:

  • Developing personal grooming and care habits
  • Planning, shopping and preparing for meals
  • Selecting and attending social events
  • Staying away from your family or usual carers

OC Connections’ Short Term Accommodation (STA) provides the opportunity for people with disability to take a breather from their everyday routine. Respite also provides carers with a chance to reset while their person is being supported in a safe environment by trained disability professionals.

Our Short Term Accommodation is based in Oakleigh, South East Melbourne. It is offered on a short-term, planned or emergency basis and includes overnight options. Lengths of stay depend on individual circumstances. We offer Short Term Accommodation every day and night of the year.

Located next to our main day support facility on Warrigal Road, many participants find it easy to access for overnight or weekend stays after a day undertaking their recreational activities.

The level of support provided varies according to an individual’s needs. Our friendly staff are fully trained, and our accommodation is a home-like setting so you will feel comfortable when away from your usual home.

We welcome participants aged 15 years and over to take advantage of our Short Term Accommodation service and are mindful of the compatibility with staff and other participants when making bookings to determine your suitability.

As a result, many of our STA residents make new friends and become regular Short Term Accommodation buddies with these friends.

Our facility accommodates three participants at any one time.  The venue is not fully accessible and cannot accommodate people with high physical support needs.

  • What is short term accommodation?

Short Term Accommodation is facility based respite care for people with disabilities. It’s a place where you can take a break from your usual home and carer’s and be supported by trained disability staff with funding from the NDIS.  It covers the cost of your care in another place for up to 14 days at a time, or for the duration noted in your plan.

  • What support will OC Connections provide through Short Term Accommodation??

OC Connections have a facility based respite home, where NDIS participants from the age of 15 years and over can stay for short periods of time and be supported by our trained staff.  Your stay can be with other participants, or on your own, depending on bookings and availability.

  • Who can use the short term accommodation services?

In order to access our Short Term Accommodation service, you must have STA NDIS funding.

You need to have this noted in your plan.  In order to do this, you need to discuss this at your planning meeting.

You may be considered for Short Term Accomodation NDIS funding if you have a goal of moving out of home later on and therefore a need to access respite to develop an understanding of what it is like to be away from home.

  • How long can I stay at OCC’s Short Term Accomodation services?

NDIS funding for Short Term Accommodation is usually for up to 14 days at a time.  If you require a longer stay, please talk to your planner at the time of your meeting, or Support Coordinator.  Our Community Living staff are also available to discuss this with you on (03) 9569 0603.  You can also complete our enquiry form or email us.

  • Is Short Term Accommodation Services covered by NDIS?

Yes, NDIS covers STA funding.  It’s often funded when your usual carers aren’t available, or for you to try new things. You can speak to your planner or Support Coordinator to find out how to arrange for this to be put in your plan.

  • Are there longer term accommodation services available through OC Connections?

Depending on your needs, goals and funding, OC Connections can assist you in determining which accommodation service is right for you.  We offer Supported Independent Living (SIL), In-home Support and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), as well as Short Term Accommodation (STA).  If you require a long-term, permanent accommodation option, you can talk to our staff in Community Living to see what is available.  You can enquire by email, or our enquiry form below, or by phone on (03) 9569 0603.
