Justin joined OC Connections in April 2015 charged with the responsibility of managing the new marketing role in preparation for the NDIS roll out in 2017

Role: Marketing Manager

Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts, La Trobe University Philosophy Major. Master of Business,  Monash University, Marketing Communication

What did you do before working in the disability sector? A variety of roles including both agency and client side marketing consultancy.  Prior to that I ran my own graphic design agency for a decade.

What attracted you to join the disability sector?

There’s only so many widgets you can sell before you need a deeper fulfillment. I’d like to think of it as an alturistic decision however in retrospect I think it was more about fulfilling my desire to “give back”. First day here I fell in love with the place and it’s positive culture.

What are the highlights of your role at OC Connections?

Everyone (staff, volunteers, participants alike) appreciates the work done. It’s a positive environment where all are full of gratitude for the effort put in. Nothing motivates quite like appreciation.

Specifically, working with participants to build skills, confidence, self-esteem, a sense of belonging and to feel valued. It goes to the core of human rights issues and leaves a warm fuzzy feeling!

What are the key challenges of your role?

This organisation, steeped in history, has accumulated amazing stories of empowerment, independence, inclusion and collaboration. Gathering those stories and getting them out and heard is often a challenge.

It’s tough some days with limited resources, but being surrounded by fabulous people who are very good at putting things in perspective makes it a positive challenge. I am impatient and often frustrated by opportunities that take time to come to fruition. But again,  that’s more about me.
