What did you do before working in the disability sector?
I owned and managed a group of childcare centres and fostered children.
What attracted you to join the disability sector?
I met someone who worked for OC Connections and they encouraged me to volunteer at the organisation. My brother has autism and intellectual disabilities. Over the years, I have provided my parents with respite to care for my brother. I took my brother to OC Connections’ disco and started volunteering and then applied for a casual role. I wasn’t really looking for work but as I enjoyed my time volunteering and working casually I thought I’d like to pursue a career in the sector. I then successfully applied for a position as a Team Leader in Accommodation Services.
What are the highlights of your role at OC Connections?
Our people (participants) and seeing our staff develop. Participants teach us what is important in life and that everything and everyone has potential despite barriers. Everyone has dreams and goals that they want to achieve and I believe that all people want to be independent. I really enjoy the opportunity to support people to live with dignity and be as independent as they can be.
What are the key challenges of your role?
Resources and not enough time in the day!
